Shadow work prompts: 40 questions for the parts you avoid
September 30, 2026 · 3 min read
Carl Jung used the word shadow for the parts of yourself you don’t identify with: traits you deny, feelings you push down, wants you’d rather not admit. They don’t go away. They show up in overreactions, in envy, and in patterns you keep repeating. Shadow work is looking at them on purpose.
How to use these prompts
Pick one prompt, not ten. Write for five minutes without editing, then read it back and underline one sentence that surprised you. That sentence is the work.
Go gently. If a prompt opens something heavy, like trauma or grief, stop there and take it to someone you trust or to a professional. Journaling is for noticing. It is not for carrying hard things alone.
