Repeating patterns

Avoidance and procrastination

The task itself is almost never the problem. What makes it heavy is everything it has come to mean while you were not doing it.

In 6/8 this pattern is called The Avoidance Loop.

The thing you are not doing is costing more than doing it would.

Is this the one you are actually running?

The Pattern Mirror scores all eight and names the loop that fits you — with the interruption point.

What it protected

Not-deciding keeps every outcome technically still possible. As long as you have not acted, you have not yet failed — and that has spared you real pain before.

What it costs now

Delay is not neutral. The undone thing keeps drawing on your attention in the background. You pay for it daily, without ever getting the relief of finishing it.

When it shows up: In the ten minutes before you were going to start — when a smaller, more urgent task suddenly becomes visible.

What it feels like from the inside

You are not lazy. The evidence: you're usually busy. Things get done all day. They are just rarely the thing.

The one that matters has a weight around it. You get near it, feel the weight, and route around it — so smoothly you barely register the turn. By evening you are genuinely tired and the thing is exactly where it was.

What makes this loop expensive is not the delay. It is the tax: the undone thing keeps running in the background. You pay a little attention on it every hour, without ever getting the relief of being done.

The cycle it runs

  1. 1The real task comes into view
  2. 2A flicker of dread you barely notice
  3. 3A smaller task becomes urgent
  4. 4The day fills up legitimately
  5. 5The weight is still there tomorrow, heavier

↻ and back to the start

What it quietly costs

  • A background hum of dread that never fully switches off.
  • Decisions made for you by the deadline, instead of by you.
  • Energy spent circling the task that would have finished it twice over.

How to interrupt it

Today2 minutes

Do the first move only

Not the task — the first physical move toward it. Open the document. Write the subject line. The dread lives at the threshold, not inside the work.

This week90 seconds each morning

Name the thing before the day names it

Each morning, write down the one thing you are most likely to route around today. Naming it removes its ability to hide behind legitimate busyness.

OngoingDaily

Make the flinch the signal

Train the flinch as information rather than instruction. The tightening that says *not this one* is usually pointing directly at the highest-value move available.

The practice

The First Move

A daily practice that shrinks the task to its first physical action, where the resistance cannot get a grip.
