Repeating patterns
Overthinking
Overthinking does not feel like avoidance from the inside. It feels like diligence — like the responsible thing to do before acting.
In 6/8 this pattern is called The Overthinking Loop.
“You are looking for certainty in a place that has never stocked it.”
Is this the one you are actually running?
The Pattern Mirror scores all eight and names the loop that fits you — with the interruption point.

Thinking it through has genuinely saved you. You catch what others miss. Preparation has kept you from real mistakes more than once.
What it costs now
Past a point, more thinking stops adding information and starts adding weight — you are not deciding, you are rehearsing.
When it shows up: At night, when the analysis is at full power and nothing can actually be acted on.
What it feels like from the inside
Your thinking is a genuine asset. You see the second-order consequence. You catch the flaw in the plan. You arrive prepared in a way that has saved situations other people walked straight into.
The problem is the off switch. Past a certain point more thought stops adding information and starts adding weight. You are not analysing anymore — you are rehearsing, and the rehearsal has no final performance.
The loop is a search for certainty in a place that does not stock it. Some decisions cannot be de-risked into obviousness. Thinking harder about them just keeps you at the threshold longer.
The cycle it runs
- 1A decision or a moment needs resolving
- 2You think it through — genuinely useful
- 3You pass the point of new information
- 4Thinking continues, now as rehearsal
- 5No decision, more weight, same question tomorrow
↻ and back to the start
What it quietly costs
- Decisions made late, by circumstance, instead of early, by you.
- Nights spent processing what daylight would have resolved in minutes.
- A real gift for analysis, spent mostly on replay.
How to interrupt it
Ask what new information arrived
On the thing you have been circling: name what you know now that you did not know an hour ago. If the answer is nothing, you are not thinking — you are looping.
Close the open tabs
Write down what is still unresolved before bed, with one next action each. The mind runs at night because it does not trust that the thing is being held anywhere else.
Set the good-enough bar in advance
Decide what counts as enough information *before* you start deliberating. The bar cannot be set from inside the loop — the loop keeps moving it.
The practice
Enough Information
A daily practice that sets the deciding bar before the deliberating starts — so thinking can finish.
